How we check listings
Updated 31 October 2026.
Each listing on EveryNearby says whether its details have been checked, and when. This page says exactly what a check is, and what it is not.
What we check today
Our checker visits the business’s own website. A listing counts as checked only when all of these are true:
- The website answers.
- It stays on the business’s own address and does not send the visitor to a different site.
- It is a real page, not a parked, for-sale or placeholder page.
- The page shows the business name or the phone number on the listing, or the website address itself is the business name.
The listing then shows the date and what was found, for example “Website example.com is live and shows the business name”.
What a check does not cover
- We do not ring the phone number.
- We do not confirm opening hours or visit the address.
- It is not a judgement of quality.
- A business without a website of its own cannot be checked this way. It says “Not yet checked” until its owner claims it.
Next to a phone number you may see how many visitors told us it worked in the last 30 days. That is what visitors reported after calling. It is not one of our checks, and we show it only when at least three visitors have said so.
How often
Each website is visited again about every 30 days. A listing whose last check is more than 21 days old says it is due for a new check.
When a check fails
A website that stops answering does not, on its own, hide a business: many good shops have no website at all. The listing simply stops being shown as checked. A business is taken off the site when a report that it has closed, or was never real, is confirmed.
Not yet checked
Most listings start from open map data, credited on Data sources. Until we have confirmed one, it says “Not yet checked” in place of a date. Those details may be right; treat them as a starting point.
The badges
- Checked, with a date: as described above.
- Claimed: the business proved it controls the listing, by signing in with the phone number on the listing, by a code sent to an email address on its own website, or by proof that a person reviewed.
- Phone verified and Email verified: the owner proved control of that contact with a code.
- GST registered: a person looked up the GST number on the government GST portal and found it active and matching. Many small businesses do not need GST, so a missing badge is not a bad sign.
- Licence checked: a person saw the licence or registration the listing names, on the date shown.
No badge can be bought, and a claim never grants any other badge.
Order and reviews
Lists show the most recently checked businesses first, or the nearest first if you share your location. Where businesses in a list have reviews, you can also order by rating. Nobody pays for a position. Reviews are written on EveryNearby by people with an account and appear automatically, without a person reading them first; they are never copied from other sites.
Tell us what is wrong
Every listing has a “Report this listing” form. You can also write to info@everynearby.com.
