1. Overview
This Policy explains which businesses appear on www.everynearby.com, where their details come from and how listings are checked, ordered and removed. It forms part of our Terms of Service.
2. Where listings come from
- Open place data, credited on our Data Sources page
- Business owners who add or claim a listing
- Corrections sent by visitors and confirmed by us
Each listing shows its source.
3. What a listing must be
- A real business or professional serving the public at or from the place shown
- One listing per location
- Accurate: owners are responsible for the details they give
4. What we do not list
- Gambling and online money games
- Tobacco and e-cigarettes
- Weapons
- Adult services
- Unlicensed financial products
Some professions are not listed, or are listed with facts only, where their own rules restrict advertising.
5. Checks and badges
- Checked shows the date we last confirmed a stated detail, and what was confirmed
- Claimed means the business has proved that it controls the listing
- Licence checked means a person saw the licence or registration the listing names, on the date shown
- GST registered means the owner gave us the business’s GST number and a person looked it up on the government GST portal on the date shown, and found it active and matching the business name and address. The number itself is never shown
- Phone verified means the owner proved, by a code sent to it, that they control the phone number shown on the listing
- Email verified means the owner proved, by a code sent to it, that they control the email address enquiries for the listing are sent to
No badge can be bought, a claim never grants the licence badge, and a badge is removed if a later check fails. See How We Check Listings.
Many small businesses are not required to register for GST. A listing without the GST registered badge is not a sign that anything is wrong.
6. How lists are ordered
By how recently a listing was checked, by rating, or by distance if you share your location. Position cannot be bought.
7. Claims
Claiming a listing. A business can claim its listing in one of three ways:
- By signing in with the phone number shown on the listing, proved by a code sent to that number
- By a code sent to an email address on the business’s own website
- By sending proof that a person reviews
Adding a business. If a business is not listed, its owner or manager can add it free from their account. We ask them to search first, so that a business is not listed twice. A new listing is shown automatically within about 15 minutes, and belongs to the person who added it.
Changes after a claim. Changes to a listing’s name, phone numbers, address, website and categories show automatically within about 15 minutes.
We may refuse or reverse a claim, or decline a new listing, that we cannot confirm.
8. When two people claim the same business
Sometimes a business is already managed by one person and another person tells us it is theirs. This is how we handle it.
Proof comes first. We open a case only when the second person holds at least one of these:
- They signed in with the phone number shown on the listing
- They confirmed an email address on the business’s own website domain
- They gave the business’s GST number
A written statement on its own is not enough.
The current manager is told at once. We email the person who manages the listing, and the contact email on the listing if there is one. They have 7 days to answer from their account page. The strongest answer is to verify the phone number shown on the listing, or to give the GST number.
The listing is frozen. It stays visible to the public, but nobody can change its details until the case is decided.
A person decides. We never leave this to an automated system. We weigh proof in this order:
- Control of the phone number shown on the listing
- Control of an email address on the business’s own website domain
- A GST registration that is active and matches the business name and address
- Written statements from both sides
If the current manager does not answer within 7 days and the other person’s proof stands, the listing is handed over. If we cannot tell who runs the business, the listing goes back to “unclaimed” and either person can claim it again with proof.
Both people are told the result by email, with the reason.
Misuse. A person whose claims are turned down twice cannot open further cases. Giving false information to take over a listing is a breach of our Terms of Service and may lead to the account being closed.
What we do not decide. We decide only who manages a listing on EveryNearby. We do not decide who legally owns a business, a name or a trade mark. For that, send us a court order or a notice from the relevant authority at info@everynearby.com and we will act on it.
9. Corrections and removal
Anyone may report a listing that is closed, wrong, fake or offensive using the “Report this listing” form. A business may ask for its listing to be corrected or removed. Once we have confirmed that a removal request comes from the business, the listing is removed and is not added again.
10. Copied content
If you believe something on the Platform copies your work, follow the copyright takedown procedure in our Terms of Service.
