How to check a doctor’s registration number in India
The short answer: open the Indian Medical Register on the National Medical Commission’s website, search by the registration number and the state council, and compare the name that comes back with the doctor in front of you. It is free and needs no login.
People look this up often. In India, “doctor registration number check” is searched on Google about 5,400 times a month. This guide shows the steps, and is honest about what the result can and cannot tell you.
What a registration number is
A doctor of modern medicine cannot practise in India without being registered with a state medical council. The council gives the doctor a registration number. That number, the council’s name and the year of registration together identify one doctor.
The National Medical Commission, a statutory body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, publishes these registrations in one place: the Indian Medical Register.
How to check, step by step
- Ask for the number. It is normally printed on the prescription and on the certificate displayed in the clinic. Note the state council and the year as well.
- Open the register. Go to the Indian Medical Register search on nmc.org.in.
- Choose how to search. The page offers a search by name, by year of registration, by registration number and by state medical council. Use the registration number and pick the council.
- Compare the result. The name, council and year should match what the doctor or the clinic told you.
When we opened the page on 4 October 2026, its council list had 30 entries and its year list started at 1912. It also had a separate tab for doctors who have been blacklisted.
If the doctor is not on the national register
Do not jump to a conclusion. The register’s own page carries the note “This data is being updated”, so a recent registration may not be there yet.
Try the state council next. Several councils run their own search, for example the Maharashtra Medical Council. If the doctor still does not appear, ask which council and year the registration is under, and contact that council.
Which state councils people look up most
Besides the national search, people search for their own state’s council. These are the monthly Google searches in India for the most-used phrase in each state.
See the numbers as a table
| State council | Searches a month |
|---|---|
| Karnataka | 390 |
| Maharashtra | 260 |
| Haryana | 260 |
| West Bengal | 210 |
| Bihar | 170 |
| Uttar Pradesh | 140 |
| Tamil Nadu | 140 |
What the result proves, and what it does not
- It shows that a person with that name is registered with that council.
- It does not show that the person treating you is that person. Match the name on the prescription and the certificate.
- It does not rate skill, experience or how a clinic is run.
- It does not cover dentists, or practitioners of ayurveda, homeopathy and other systems. They are registered by separate councils.
Where EveryNearby fits
We list clinics and hospitals in 310 Indian cities, and each listing says whether, and when, it was last checked. That check is about the clinic’s own website, not about any doctor’s registration. How we check explains exactly what we look at.
So use both: the listing to find a clinic and see how fresh its details are, and the register to confirm the doctor.
Questions people ask
Is there one national list of registered doctors in India?
Yes. The National Medical Commission publishes the Indian Medical Register on its website. It lists doctors registered with the state medical councils, and anyone can search it without logging in.
Can I search with only the doctor's name?
Yes, the register has a search by name. Common names return many people, so the registration number together with the state council is the quicker and safer search.
The doctor does not appear on the register. Does that mean the doctor is fake?
Not by itself. The National Medical Commission's own page says the data is being updated. Check the state medical council's website next, and ask the doctor which council and year the registration is under.
Are dentists and ayurveda or homeopathy doctors on this register?
No. The Indian Medical Register covers doctors registered with state medical councils. Dentists and practitioners of ayurveda, homeopathy and other systems are registered by their own separate councils.
Does EveryNearby check doctors' registration numbers?
No. A Checked date on EveryNearby means the clinic's own website was live and showed its name or phone number on that date. It does not confirm any doctor's registration, so use the register for that.
